Maps & Network : Research and Development

Being an art lover, I always had interest in all kinds of art forms especially dance.  It is a very beautiful form of art in which you can express anything with elegance  and exuberance. I recently came across a dance instructor and I asked him about  his experiences in this field in Pakistan and what I heard was not much of shock  and everyone who lives in this society knows this for a fact that any dance form is  a taboo. Which is quite sad to be honest and seeing how brilliantly he executed this  art form was every more saddening as he was not getting the recognition he  deserved in this country.

There are a lot of people in this society who love to dance but they can’t pursue it  as a career option. The negativity attached with this art form is on a very extreme  level and anything that is on an extreme level is not a logical opinion it is just an  emotion that has been passed down for generations.

But this doesn’t mean that people don’t choose their love of dance over being  accepted by society. Their passion is much greater than caring about this society’s  emotions or judgement, they fight with their families this society but they never  give up on their passion which commendable. As you might have read the tagline  of my installation it is called “Rough Heels” the mere reason behind this tagline is  to show the struggle behind all dancers in Pakistan and even after the hardships  they face daily living here they don’t give up on their dreams and passion. I have  dedicated this Art Installation to all those dancers that have come before us and the  ones that reside among us. I want to dedicate this installation to their passion and

to not choosing to quit but finding till the end, and to choose “to be” rather than  “not to be”. This topic is rarely highlighted and therefore I want to show my  support and love for this art from through this art installation.
